Big apple buzz: four U.S. presidents are in town

U.S. President Joe Biden will return to New York City today for a star-studded fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall with former President Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Meanwhile, Donald Trump will attend a vigil for an NYPD officer, Jonathan Diller, who was fatally shot at a Queens traffic light this week.

The MTA approved a highly controversial $15 budget congestion pricingplan, which will go into effect for drivers entering the Manhattan business district on July 15. New York City will be the first U.S. metro area to do so.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the state budget will (unsurprisingly) be delayed to April 4, marking the third consecutive year of such delays. To keep the government afloat, she will send a temporary stop-gap spending bill.

Global:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his U.K. conservative crew received some grim numbers yesterday, confirming Britain entered a recession in 2023. Sunak had promised to “grow the economy” last year. [I went to a panel at Columbia University yesterday called: “Is Trump a Fascist?” and my professor Helen Benedict compared Sunak with Trump in her inquiry.]

Binyamin Netanyahu asked Washinton, D.C., to reschedule a White House meeting with a top Israeli official after canceling last minute last week. Tensions are rising between the two as America played its most damning card yet (which doesn’t say much) by abstaining from the UN vote calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.

Baltimore’s Francis Key Bridge collapse is one of the greatest accidents in U.S. history. Six migrant workers on the night shift died. It’s America’s 17th largest port. Analysts speculate construction will take months or even years. The pilot of the cargo freighter — a ship only slightly shorter than the Eiffel Tower — radioed for help and signaled the ship lost power during the 30 period upon leaving Baltimore’s port early Tuesday morning.

Sam Bankman-Fried will visit a Manhattan courtroom to receive his sentence from Judge Lewis Kaplan. Kaplan also oversaw cases between writer E. Jean Carroll and former President Donald Trump. Bankman-Fried could face 110 years (but 50 at the least).

U.S. President Joe Biden will hold a fundraiser with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday, March 28. This picture was taken in the early evening of late October 2023.
